KUPSA on Gender Inequality in the Workplace

It seems slightly unjust that a man can earn more than a woman for doing the exact same thing just because he has a pair of testicles and she doesn’t. It suggests that having testicles helps one to do their job better and you don’t have to be an aspiring pharmacist like us to know that’s not true. So, what can disadvantaged women do while the government fails to get their act together? Well, we can identify our worth for starters, cheekily asking a male colleague what he earns and seeing whether that statistic about women working for free for the last three months of the year is true. Secondly, it’s ingrained within us from a young age to not boast about our work - but that’s all Tom does when he bothers to do something extra – which is rare. Maybe take a leaf out of his book and start letting the right people know about our accomplishments. Thirdly, knowing and owning our worth within the workplace, we can be assertive when asking for a promotion and providing evidence as to why we deserve it. Lastly, we can become expert negotiators just in case our manager says, ‘not right now’ or ‘not yet’. We don’t have to accept that vague answer, we can ask for it to be defined, we can even ask to be mentored if they say all we need is fine tuning. Its 2017 and completely okay for women to start a revolution in the office.
