SWAG is made up of the Activities Officer, Sports Development Coordinator and 6 Student Representatives; 1 student chair, 1 sports tour rep, 1 events rep, and 1 from each of the sport subgroups: weekly competitive, championship and performance, and recreational sports clubs.
SWAG is there to ensure that all Sports Clubs are fairly represented within the Union and the University, and to help the development and delivery of the sports strategy at Kingston University. The group is also key in helping with the running of Union sporting events including Varsity, Alumni Day, Tour and Sports Awards. The group meets monthly to ensure regular feedback is given to the Sports Office and that the student voice is driving the decisions made.
Here's a little bit more about our SWAG members...
Connor Mottrom (Chair) 'My name is Connor, I’m 22 and study Aerospace Engineering. I captain the Men’s Lacrosse team and am a vice-captain for another team outside of university. I went for my position as Chair of SWAG as last year I was the Tour Rep and wanted a more diverse and challenging role this year which looked at more parts of sports than just one. Being the Chair means I help everyone else on the team with their roles when they need the help and act as a channel of communication for different teams across the university'.
Maddie Doe (Events) 'My name is Madi, I am the sport events rep for all sports societies at Kingston University. I chose to take on this role because throughout my dance degree I have grown an interest in events management so took this position to gain further knowledge and skills in that area.I consider myself an all round sports player, specialising in Dance and Tennis and I aim to make all sport events as successful as the last!'.
Jude Shorter (Tour) ' My name is Jude and I am a third year training to be a teacher. As Tour rep you are in charge of tour for the sports teams. This involves communicating with the social secs and ilovetour. You are in charge of recruitment for tour, ensuring everyone has paid their deposits and final payments in time, sorting name changes and just being in communication with people should they have any questions. You also are in charge of organising stash for tour, including tour names and similar. Additionally, you sort out coaches and hotels and also getting the students from here to tour and back again and in charge of people while out on tour. This includes health and safety issues and making sure people behave while away.'
Jay Patterson (Recreation) 'Hey, I'm Jay and am your Sports Working Group Recreational Representative. I'm currently in my final year studying Mechanical Engineering. I am President of Snow Sports (KUSS) and Treasurer for Mountaineering (KUMC) so have a large span over the two biggest recreational sports clubs. I chose to run for this position as I wanted to be able to communicate how all of the recreational sports clubs at Kingston are getting on to The Union. Sport is such an important part of University life and I want to ensure people get the most out of their clubs'.
Emma Ung (BUCS) 'HI, I’m Emma, the BUCS rep for SWAG. I’m in my final year at Kingston studying Psychology with Television and New Broadcasting Media as well as being the President of KU Netball club. My role entails supporting other BUCS clubs and being the vocal point of BUCS concerns. Being part of a BUCS club for 4 years meant I’ve had a lot of experience in university sports, developing Kingston sports through SWAG has been a great opportunity to push other clubs to be the best. Helping support cougar chaos’, sporting fixtures and other events has been a fab responsibility this year, SWAG has been very rewarding in expanding our interpersonal skills!'
Abi Simpson (Performance and Championship) 'My name is Abigail Simpson, I'm a second year dance student from Northern Ireland. I have been part of the cheerleading club and this year I am the teams Social Sec along with one other team mate. My role in SWAG is competitions rep and my job is to communicate any problems or queries within the compitions teams back to the union and make sure they are dealt with in a timely fashion. I ran for competitions rep as I think its important for every team in the uni to know they are being listened to if they have any problems and that no team is more important than the others'.
