Create a project

Run your own Student-Led Volunteering Project with the Volunteering Office!

  • Do you have the passion to make things happen?
  • Have you identified a problem in your local community that no-one seems to be tackling?
  • Did you know that the Volunteering Office funds students to run their own volunteering projects?

'Why should I?'

Running your own project is a great way to tackle a community issue close to your heart, whilst inspiring others to get involved. As a leader you will also gain additional project management skills, from design to volunteer recruitment, which are all great for your CV. Its a win-win!

'I don't know how!'

Don't worry if you are not sure if you know how to run your own volunteering opportunity, anyone can be a student leader and the Volunteering Office will support you from start to finish. We will provide you with training, advice and up to £350 funding to enable you to get your idea off the ground. You also have the entirety of your time at Kingston University to complete the project, and the Volunteering Team will work with you to plan everything around your timetable and free time.

'What if I can't think of a good idea?'

Don't worry! Have a look at the following suggestions and see if any of them inspire you.

Previous students have:

- Run art, drumming, IT and cultural Caribbean activities for young people.

- Knitted hats for premature babies in local hospitals and made bunting for community festivals.

- Written a booklet on LGBT issues to raise awareness in schools.

- Created a cookbook for carers.

- Led drama workshops and created a Christmas pantomime with MIND.

- Taught Taekwondo, American Football and Rugby to young carers.

- Thames River Clean (we pulled out 108 trollies from the river!).

- Taught mindfulness in schools.

Still not sure? You can also book an informal chat with a team member, who can help you with developing a community issue you are passionate about into a fully fledged project.

'I don't have the time to run the project on my own!'

Not sure you want to run the project by yourself?  Then get fellow Kingston University friends to run it with you! Alternatively you can collaborate with a Union Sports club through Sports Volunteering. Or see if your Union Society will run it with you. You can even work with the Volunteering Office to help you in recruiting additional volunteers through the volunteering portal.

'I'm interested!'

To get started email S.Dutton@kingston.ac.uk, with your project idea! Sarah our Volunteering Project Design and Development Coordinator, will then book a time with you to chat about making your project a reality.
